MANILA, Philippines — On Tuesday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) distanced itself from retired officers who openly promote or express support for candidates in the May elections.

PNP Public Information Office Chief Brig. Gen. Roderick Alba said in a statement that the police force is apolitical and will never endorse any political party or candidate seeking elected office.

“We appreciate your political ideas and opinions as private persons, with all due courtesy to our retired PNP officers.” However, please refrain from engaging in partisan political action with the PNP,” Alba warned.

Retired police officers and other “non-PNP persons misrepresenting the organization” on social media, according to Alba, do not reflect the force’s political ideas and opinions.

He emphasizes that the PNP is not in the business of making political statements or interfering in the campaigns of certain candidates or political parties.

“Non-PNP individuals involved in similar actions are responsible not only for their own act of deception but also for the group that hired them for political propaganda and the candidates who would benefit from it,” he added.
