OFWs will get better service from the Department of Migrant Workers: Solon
On Tuesday, a lawmaker said that the creation of a new department to help migrant Filipinos will make it easier and faster for the country’s workers, especially those who are in trouble.
Luis Raymund Villafuerte, a representative from Camarines Sur, said that the new law setting up the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) would make it easier to keep track of Filipinos living abroad, especially those who are in trouble. It includes an information system that will serve as a database for all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
OFWs will no longer have to go from one government office to another to get what they need, he said. The new department will be in charge of overseas employment and the return of Filipino workers.
“The government must do a much better job of protecting and aiding OFWs, from the time they are hired to the time they return home,” he said. “With the rise in remittances, this is even more important because the economies that hire migrant workers have started to recover from Covid-19 and are hiring again.”
This is what he said: OFW remittances have helped keep our economy going during the height of the pandemic and will keep it going as we work to get over this global health crisis.
In August 2021, Villafuerte said personal remittances from Filipinos who live outside the country rose by 4.8% to $2.889 billion from $2.756 billion in August of last year. He cited the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
Our modern-day heroes, who have kept our economy afloat in the face of all kinds of problems from outside and inside the country, deserve to have a department that protects and promotes their interests, Villafuerte said. This is in line with President Duterte’s promise to them.
He signed the law that made the DMW before 2021. It will take over the functions of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and protect the rights of migrant workers.
A survey by the Philippine Statistics Authority will show that the DWM will help an estimated 2.2 million Filipinos who live outside of the country (PSA).
