The Comelec has scheduled the first presidential and vice-presidential debates for March 19-20.
MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) urged the public on Thursday to tune in to this weekend’s inaugural Pilipinas Debates 2022.
Commissioner George Erwin Garcia announced that the first presidential and vice-presidential debates will take place at 7 p.m. on March 19 and 20, respectively, at the Sofitel Tent in Pasay City.
“Attend the debates with us; we need to get to know our candidates.” We must become acquainted with our candidates. This is our contribution to ensuring that voters are fully informed about the candidates they are voting for, their qualifications, and their positions,” he stated during a press conference.
Additionally, he assured that the event will be equitable to all participants.
“We will ensure that we can do so impartially, fairly, and with everyone having an equal opportunity to speak with voters,” he said.
The debates this weekend are the first of a five-part series organized by the Comelec for candidates running for national offices.
Former presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella, labor leader Leody de Guzman, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, former National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales, Senator Panfilo Lacson, Senator Emmanuel Pacquiao, businessman Faisal Mangondato, Dr. Jose Montemayor Jr., and Vice President Leni Robredo are scheduled to attend the March 19 event.
Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s spokesperson, lawyer Vice Rodriguez, previously stated that the standard-bearer of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) will abstain from the debates.
Walden Bello, Rizalito David, Manny Lopez, Dr. Willie Ong, Senator Francis Pangilinan, Carlos Serapio, and Senate President Vicente Sotto III will participate in the vice presidential debate scheduled for March 20.
Lito Atienza, the former mayor of Manila, has already formally declined due to medical reasons.
Sara Duterte, Davao City Mayor and Marcos’ running mate, will also abstain from the debates.
Marcos and Duterte, on the other hand, have yet to notify the poll body in writing of their intention to abstain from the debates.
Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez stated that the public can watch the debates on television, as the program will be broadcast on all local channels.
The debate will also be streamed live online on the poll body’s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).
