The government is ‘doing everything possible to alleviate poverty.

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ Malacanang said Tuesday that the national government is stepping up efforts to address poverty in the country, despite the fact that the Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey revealed a decline in the number of Filipino families who consider themselves poor.

“Alam namin na mataas pa rin po ito, kaya naman ang aming prioridad ay muling pagbangon ng ating ekonomiya para mas maraming Pilipino ang magkaroon ng trabaho at hindi magutom,” acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said during a Palace press briefing.

According to the SWS survey conducted in December 2021, approximately 43% of Filipino families self-identified as poor.

This equates to approximately 10.7 million families, a slight decrease from the 11.4 million (45%) in September last year.

Additionally, the pollster discovered that 39% of families considered themselves “borderline poor,” while 19% considered themselves not to be poor.

Andanar cited Duterte’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) as one of his legacies that contributed to the country’s poverty reduction.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11310, a law that institutionalizes the government’s 4Ps, in March 2019.

The 4Ps, a national poverty reduction strategy and human capital investment program, provide poor households with a maximum of seven years of conditional cash transfers (CCT) to improve their health, nutrition, and educational access.

Meanwhile, Andanar applauded a report indicating that the Philippines is Southeast Asia’s second happiest country.

The Philippines was ranked 60th out of 146 countries in the 2022 World Happiness Report (WHR) released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), an improvement from its 61st ranking in the 2021 report.

Singapore topped the list of Southeast Asian countries with the highest levels of happiness and was ranked 27th globally.

Finland has retained its title as the world’s happiest country for the fifth consecutive year.
