Reduce, reuse, and recycle are three strategies used by a food company to save water.

MANILA, Philippines — Through different water conservation programs as part of its corporate social responsibility, a food company has managed to save almost 11 million cubic meters of water since 2018.

Irwin Lee, CEO of Universal Robina Corp. (URC), said, “We know that water is a nonrenewable resource and that it is a vital input element in the creation of our products.”

URC has conserved enough water to fill 4,600 Olympic-size swimming pools in the last four years, according to Lee.

Last year, the company recycled approximately 860,000 cubic meters of water, enough to supply 2.26 million people with water for a day.

All of this was made possible through URC’s water-saving reduce, reuse, and recycle program.

URC has reduced its water use by repairing leaks, replacing pipelines with more lasting materials such as stainless steel, eliminating production waste, boosting the efficiency of its water treatment facilities, and harvesting rainwater.

When cleaning pallets, watering plants, and flushing toilets, it recycles water.

It reuses water that would otherwise be required to wash crucial raw materials used in its products, such as unpeeled potatoes, as well as for cooling towers.

URC also has a number of programs in place to safeguard important watersheds.

Reforestation programs, coastal, river, and drainage clean-up campaigns, and mangrove-planting activities are among the company’s environmental stewardship initiatives.

Last year, URC’s partnerships with local government entities and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources resulted in the planting of 7,600 seedlings at various locations (DENR).

Meanwhile, the company’s Sugar and Renewables Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to adopt a three-hectare forest in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental, and another five hectares in San Enrique, Iloilo.

It intends to acquire more watersheds and forests in the future.
