ZAMBOANGA CITY, PHILIPPINES – The local government has temporarily prohibited the entry of all live poultry and non-poultry products, including day-old chicks, pullets, table eggs, and salted eggs.

Additionally, the temporary total ban extends to ready-to-lay pullets, ducks, quail, embryonated (locally referred to as “balut”), and other products and byproducts from mainland Luzon and other Avian Influenza-affected areas.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar issued Executive Order 720, prohibiting the sale of birds, ducks, and quails in Bulacan and Pampanga farms until April 15.

Salazar described avian influenza as a highly contagious viral disease caused by the Influenza “A” virus that affects several species of food-producing birds (chickens, turkeys, quails, and guinea fowl), as well as pet and wild birds, in a statement released Tuesday.

She noted that several provinces on Luzon, including Laguna and Camarines Sur, had also confirmed cases of avian influenza, while some provinces remained under surveillance and testing.

She stated that the city government, through the Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet), is enforcing strict border controls and quarantine inspections at all city entry points—sea, land, and air.

Additionally, she directed that all barangay chairpersons, barangay biosafety officers, and OCVET-Veterinary Biosafety Officers strengthen and implement minimum biosecurity measures in their respective jurisdictions.

Meanwhile, Salazar urged the public to report any unusual illness or death of poultry birds, ducks, or pet birds to the OCVet or the nearest OCVet Field Office.

Salazar also urged residents to avoid contact with the resident, wild, or migratory birds in their areas, as well as to refrain from handling and consuming poultry birds, ducks, and quail that have died of unknown causes.
