A legislator makes an appeal for a complimentary rail ride on the LRT and PNR.
MANILA, Philippines โ On Wednesday, a party-list lawmaker urged the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) to also offer free rail rides to help commuters cope with the high cost of oil.
This follows President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s announcement on Tuesday that the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) will offer free rides from March 28 to April 30 in celebration of the rail system’s successful completion of a multibillion-peso rehabilitation project.
Representative Angelica Natasha Co of the BHW Party-list said offering free rides is a targeted measure to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices, as it immediately benefits rail commuters, including health care front-liners and hospital staff.
“I reiterate my recommendation that the LRTA and PNR provide free rides to their passengers, if only for a limited time,” Co said in a statement.
Co expressed gratitude to Duterte and Transportation Secretary Art Tugade for providing free MRT-3 rides for a month.
Tugade noted that during the specified dates, train passengers can ride the MRT-3 for free in all of its stations.
He also stressed that this will significantly alleviate the riding public’s financial burden, particularly in light of inflation, rising fuel prices, and the return of many Filipino workers to on-site work.
Co stated that these measures would persuade motorists to leave their cars at home for a few days in order to save money on fuel, resulting in less congestion.
Apart from the free MRT-3 rides, Co lauded Duterte for his government’s plan to provide a PHP500 monthly subsidy to impoverished Filipino families during the current fuel price crisis.
“Increasing the UCT (unconditional cash transfer) to PHP500 is the compassionate and rational response,” Co stated.
Duterte directed the Department of Finance (DOF) on Monday to increase the monthly fuel subsidy to poor families from PHP200 to PHP500 per household, following criticism over the government’s initial plan to distribute a meager PHP200 monthly fuel subsidy.
He asserted that the PHP200 cash assistance previously approved by the DOF is “inadequate” and “incapable of supporting” even a family of three.
