Smartmatic has been ordered by the Comelec to produce a report on a “security breach.”
MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has ordered Smartmatic International to produce a report on the alleged security vulnerability that was discovered at a Joint Congressional Oversight Committee (JCOC) hearing on the Automated Election System (AES).
Comelec chairperson Saidamen Pangarungan said in a statement Thursday that he has already directed Executive Director Bartolome Sinocruz to investigate the charges against the foreign service provider.
“”We also instructed the Law Department to analyze the Smartmatic contract and advise the Commission on the courses of action to be taken as provided by law and jurisprudence,” Pangarungan stated.
He also directed Sinocruz to work with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and obtain a copy of the bureau’s report as soon as it became available.
“I’d also like to emphasize that these are just a few of the procedures that the Comelec has implemented in carrying out our mandate of safeguarding the sanctity of the vote since my appointment,” Pangarungan added.
Pangarungan further reassured the people that the polling board will continue to implement additional protections and procedures “maintain our democratic process”
He also ordered the formulation of a plan to prevent such occurrences from occurring in the future.
Senator Imee Marcos, the chairperson of the JCOC-AES, said last week that the service provider had a security breach after one of its contractual workers allegedly took off an official laptop and released its information.
