As a result of the ongoing volcanic upheaval on Taal Island, entry is prohibited.

MANILA, Philippines – Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Renato Solidum Jr. reiterated on Friday night that entry into the Taal Volcano Island (TVI) must be prohibited, as a steam-driven explosion is possible in the Taal Volcano, posing a threat to those on the island.

Solidum made the announcement after Phivolcs said a phreatomagmatic burst occurred at 2:26 a.m. on Friday, resulting in a 500-meter-high plume.

Phivolcs has also identified two two-minute volcanic shocks in the last 24 hours. The upwelling of hot volcanic fluids produced plumes that reached 1,000 meters in height, according to Phivolcs.

On March 23, the average sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was 5,751 tons.

“Taal Volcano’s phreatomagmatic burst and strong SO2 emissions indicate persistent instability, and the threat of a steam-driven explosion or gas ejection remains. It is forbidden to enter TVI “According to Solidum, who spoke to the Philippine News Agency.

He explained that explosions caused by steam or gas can cause physical harm to anyone working at the TVI. “Inhaling high levels of SO2 gas can be harmful to one’s health. As a result, we advise against entering “Solidum has been added.

The interaction of magma and water causes phreatomagmatic eruptions. Multiple explosive episodes, spaced at varying intervals, are typical of eruptions.

Over the Taal Volcano, an Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) is in effect, meaning that unexpected steam or gas-driven explosions, volcanic quakes, light ashfall, and fatal expulsions of volcanic gas are all possible and pose a threat to areas within and near the TVI.

Entry into the vicinity of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure must also be rigorously banned, according to Phivolcs.

In the event of fresh instability, it also encouraged the local administration to examine and reinforce the preparation of previously evacuated barangays around Taal Lake.
