BRUXELLES – The European Union’s (EU) member states’ leaders have expressed their willingness to impose new tough sanctions on Russia and Belarus, the European Council said in a statement released Friday.

“The European Union has already adopted significant sanctions against Russia and Belarus, and the EU remains prepared to close loopholes and target actual and potential circumvention, as well as to move quickly with additional coordinated robust sanctions against Russia and Belarus,” the European Council stated.

“Any attempt to circumvent sanctions or to assist Russia in any other way must be halted,” the statement stated.

The EU also agreed to establish a trust fund for Ukraine’s solidarity, the European Council stated.

“The European Council agrees to establish a Ukraine Solidarity Trust Fund, invites participation from its international partners, and urges preparations to begin immediately. It requests that the Commission continue providing technical assistance to assist Ukraine in implementing necessary reforms “It was added.
