The anniversary of the NPA serves only to remind us of lost lives and atrocities: Lorenzana
MANILA, Philippines – The New People’s Army (NPA) anniversary means nothing more than lives lost and suffering as a result of its meaningless cause, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Monday.
“We are reminded once again of the lives lost and the suffering caused by Communist Terrorists, most notably their armed wing, the NPA. Over the years, the NPA has taken pride in lawless acts such as extortion, destruction of civilian-owned property, and undermining the government, all in the name of their ostensible ideology “Lorenzana made the remarks in a statement ahead of Tuesday’s 53rd anniversary of the NPA.
The NPA was founded on March 29, 1969, as the Communist Party of the Philippines’ armed wing (CPP).
Lorenzana, on the other hand, stated that more NPA members have reintegrated into society and are now leading peaceful and productive lives with the assistance of the government.
“Nonetheless, we are optimistic about a more progressive and developed Philippines. Thousands of people have been given the opportunity to rebuild their lives and become productive members of society through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program administered by the interagency Task Force Balik-Loob (TFBL) (E-CLIP). They have exchanged their firearms for more peaceful tools of trade, and I am encouraged by our former rebels’ success stories “Lorenzana remarked.
Despite the fact that communist terrorists have been weakened and the country is now reaping the benefits of peace, the DND chief stated that efforts must continue to be made to rescue remaining CPP-NPA members from their lost cause.
“There is still much more to be done. While we reap the benefits of peace, we remain committed to securing our communities, encouraging CPP-NPA members to apply for the E-CLIP, and putting an end to the country’s decades-long communist armed conflicts. Our hope is that whoever succeeds us will continue the work we have begun and will sustain our peace initiatives “Lorenzana remarked.
The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization.
On June 23, 2021, the Anti-Terrorism Council also formally designated the NDF as a terrorist organization, citing it as “an integral and inseparable part” of the April 1973 CPP-NPA.
