PEZA will suggest a hybrid work setting to the future administrator.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has stated that it will propose to the next administration that it change its policy to incorporate a work-from-home (WFH) arrangement, particularly for the information technology and business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) industry.

PEZA Director General Charito Plaza issued a statement on Tuesday urging IT-BPO enterprises working in PEZA-registered IT parks and economic zones to return to their offices on April 1 to avoid losing their tax advantages, as mandated by the Fiscal Incentives Review Board (FIRB).

“We support the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines’ (IBPAP) proposal to implement a hybrid work scheme for the IT-BPO sector, and we understand the concerns of our investors and individual workers who will be affected by this order; however, we must adhere to the law’s regulations,” Plaza said.

She went on to say that PEZA-registered businesses are subject to the PEZA law as well as the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises (CREATE) statute, which stipulates that export activities must take place within ecozones in order to keep the government’s tax breaks.

Companies registered with PEZA, according to Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, must restart onsite activities.

“If PEZA-registered enterprises choose to adopt a hybrid WFH arrangement, especially if it’s warranted by the nature of their operations, such as service exports,” Lopez said in a statement.

PEZA, according to Plaza, endorses the hybrid work structure because it has proven to be effective in the past during pandemics.

“What we can do is recommend that this be addressed by the future administration.” As of now, we must adhere to current regulations and the FIRB’s decision, as well as assist in the return to normalcy of the economy,” she added.
