When going past churches, drivers are encouraged to turn down the sound of jingles.
MANILA, Philippines — The Diocese of Malolos appealed on Wednesday that all political candidates competing in the May 9 elections reduce the intensity of campaign jingles played in their caravans while driving by churches, particularly during Masses.
“Please inform your supporters and campaign staff that all houses of worship should be respected. The diocese announced in a Facebook post on the Malolos Cathedral – Immaculate Conception Parish Cathedral and Basilica’s page that “there are sacraments and prayers being held especially on Sundays.”
The loud noises also upset others who are solemnly praying inside the church, according to the statement.
It went on to say, “Kindly turn off or down the volume of your campaign jingles so that the devout are not distracted from their prayers.”
National and municipal candidates began their campaigns on February 8 and March 25, respectively.
Jingles are played by loudspeakers loaded in roaming vans of candidates during election season.
