The Philippine Air Force has received its first female jet fighter pilot.
MANILA, Philippines โ The Philippine Air Force (PAF) announced on Thursday that a Filipina has qualified to join the ranks of the country’s elite jet fighter pilots.
1st Lt. Jul Laiza Mae B. Camposano-Beran qualified to fly into combat utilizing the SIAI-Marchetti AS-211 light jet combat aircraft, which the PAF also uses for attack and surveillance operations, according to PAF spokesperson Col. Maynard Mariano.
“On March 30, 2022, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) created history by appointing its first-ever female fighter pilot from the 5th Fighter Wing at Basa Air Base, Floridablanca, Pampanga. Jul Laiza Mae B. Camposano-Beran, 1st Lt. Jul Laiza Mae B. Camposano-Beran, 1st Lt. Jul Laiza Mae B. Camposano-Beran, 1st Lt. Jul Laiza Mae B. Camposano-Beran, 1st Lt “Added he.
Camposano-Beran initially flew solo in the AS-211 on December 5, 2020, according to Mariano.
In a message to the Philippine News Agency, he continued, “May (she had) 150 plus hours na siya sa (flying the) AS-211.”
Before flying “solo,” Mariano claimed Camposano-Berran went through “Jet Qualification Training” and “Intro To Fighter Fundamentals and Combat Crew Training” in the AS-211.
These two-year training are designed to ensure that fighter pilot cadets like Camposano-Beran learn not only how to fly the aircraft, but also how to battle air-to-air, air-to-ground, and air-to-surface threats in the AS-211, he added.
“At the same time, she was flying with the FA-50 as a backseat pilot, gaining combat experience by flying in the FA-50 on a real strike operation,” he added.
Camposano-Beran will transition or transfer to the FA-50PHs after gaining additional experience and flying time in the AS-211.
Mariano said that she will be able to do so once she has completed 300 hours in the AS-211.
The FA-50PH is the PAF’s principal jet fighter, capable of Mach 1.5 speeds, and was purchased from South Korea between 2015 and 2017.
During her military pilot training at the PAF Flying School, Camposano-Beran flew the propeller-driven T-41D or Cessna R-172 during the primary part of her training, and then the SIAI-Marchetti SF-260MP during the Basic Phase.
Before graduating in 2017, she had accumulated roughly 180 hours of flight time in two propeller-driven aircraft.
Camposano-Beran is a Tulunan, Cotabato native, and a 2015 graduate of the Philippine Military Academy.
“Over 170 members of her class, she became the Academy’s fifth girl to receive the Athletic Saber Award,” he noted.
Mariano also said that two other female pilots are now preparing to be fighter pilots.
