MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo R. Duterte has endorsed his daughter, vice presidential candidate, and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, for her ability to serve the country.

Duterte told a large crowd at a campaign rally for his ruling political party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), in Lapu-Lapu City on Thursday night that while he is going to leave office in June, his daughter would carry on his legacy if she is elected vice president.

Despite acknowledging his apparent conflicts with his daughter, President Duterte wooed the electorate in Cebu’s vote-rich province by saying Sara is “very good” and “extremely hardworking.”

Sara would be a good fit for the vice presidency, according to Duterte, because of her qualities and leadership style.

Despite rising calls for Sara to run for president, Duterte voiced discontent with her decision to run for vice president under the Lakas – Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD).

He also accused Sara’s running companion, presidential hopeful Ferdinand Marcos Jr., of pressuring his daughter to run for vice president rather than the presidency.

Despite this, Duterte exhorted Sara to “be committed to (the) country” and “work hard for the people” in a filmed video message shown at an event in Cebu City on March 19.

While expressing support for Sara’s bid for vice president, Duterte insisted that he would not endorse any presidential contender, opting to remain “neutral.”

Despite his recent meeting with Marcos, which prompted the PDP-Laban to endorse the presidential candidate, the President made the comment.
