CITY OF LAOAG – To promote tourism growth and economic recovery amid the worldwide pandemic, local officials have chosen to contribute PHP3 million to rehabilitate the access road leading to Tanap-Avis Falls in Burgos town.

“The paths will be renovated for the comfort and safety of visitors, including the construction of pleasant rooms as well as a [tourism] deck,” Aianree Raquel, head of the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office, said in an interview on Monday.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan unanimously approved Draft Resolution 2022-03-482 on Monday, giving Gov. Matthew Joseph Manotoc the authority to enter into a tripartite agreement for the improvement of the Tanap-Avis Falls with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Watershed Forest Reserve-Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) and Burgos town.

Raquel was relieved that a budget had been set aside, as the development project had been long delayed.

The basin-like falls, which are located in the rural town of Tanap, are part of a watershed forest reserve managed by the DENR-Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau’s National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS).

The public domain comprising roughly 41 hectares was proclaimed one of the most important river systems up north by Proclamation 803, signed on February 1, 1971, during the administration of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

The local council is currently providing assistance to visitors to the Tanap-Avis Falls.

Raquel explained that once the paths have been improved, the management of this outdoor attraction will be passed over to the Burgos town council in collaboration with the PAMB, with the help of the provincial tourism office.
