Globe takes action against child pornography and unlawful gambling websites.
MANILA, Philippines — Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe), a mobile telecommunications and broadband provider, has stepped up its campaign against online child pornography and illegal gambling.
Globe said in a statement Monday that since the start of 2022, a total of 11,320 uniform resource locators (URLs) and 502 domains hosting pornographic content, as well as 194 domains for illegal gambling, have been blocked.
According to the statement, “Globe has invested over USD2.7 million in content filtering technologies that prohibit websites and pictures that encourage child pornography, unlawful gambling, and online piracy.”
The #MakeITSafePH project, which was established in 2017, is the name of the campaign.
It has blocked 3,975 domains and 57,785 URLs that include child pornography thus far.
“Through the advocacy, Globe informs consumers about the prevalence of online sexual abuse and exploitation of children, as well as how they can protect minors from such dangers,” Globe said.
The company is collaborating with government authorities like the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Department of Justice, as well as other partners like the Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators and UNICEF.
Its approach is in compliance with Republic Act 9775, also known as the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009, which requires all internet service providers, including Globe, to implement technologies, procedures, or software to prevent access to or transmission of child pornography.
The Philippines is one of the world’s major providers of content connected to online sexual abuse and exploitation of minors, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the United States.
President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act 116481, or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act, on March 4 as part of the government’s efforts to prevent child abuse and exploitation.
Sexual behavior with people under the age of 16 is deemed statutory rape unless the age gap between the parties is less than three years, according to the legislation, which raised the age of sexual consent in the country from 12 to 16 years old.
