The NCR wage board will consider the TUCP’s request for a pay raise.
MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region – Regional Wages and Productivity Board (NCR-RTWPB) said on Tuesday that it will meet again to discuss the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines’ wage raise petition (TUCP).
“So, on April 8, we’ll decide whether to include TUCP’s petition in the consolidated petitions or whether it won’t be given due process.” It appears that the petition is no longer universal, and we may take it into consideration. However, we must reconvene and debate the petition,” Sara Mirasol, chairperson of the NCR-RTWPB, said in a virtual forum.
These merged petitions, according to Mirasol, include those submitted by UWIN, the Metro East Labor Federation, and the Solidarity of Unions in the Philippines for Empowerment and Reforms.
Because of the execution of health and safety regulations owing to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the UWIN’s petition was previously filed on Nov. 25, 2019, but was not acted upon.
She went on to say that the wage increases requested by the organizations range from PHP213 to PHP250.
Mirasol also defended the board’s decision to reject the TUCP’s initial petition, citing jurisdictional concerns.
“We don’t have the jurisdiction to increase the minimum wage across the board in the National Capital Region, so it wasn’t given due process.” Just to be clear, the authority is limited to the minimum wage. There can’t be a lower floor pay than that. “When you say across the board, you’re referring to all payments, which is outside the wage board’s jurisdiction,” Mirasol explained.
The TUCP reported on Monday that the wage board had rejected their plea for a PHP470 rise in minimum wage earners’ pay.
