MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) plans to build an evacuation center belt in Batangas to help the province prepare for potential eruptions of the Taal Volcano and other disasters.

When there are earthquakes, typhoons, significant flooding, or when Taal is demonstrating unrest, Secretary Eduardo del Rosario said the DHSUD will make sure evacuation facilities are both solid and comfortable for those seeking shelter.

“In Nasugbu, we hope to build another evacuation facility,” del Rosario said in a statement on Tuesday.

Three evacuation centers were opened on Monday in Barangay Calayaan, Sta. Teresita; Barangay San Juan, Alitagtag; and Barangay Dos, Mataasnakahoy, all strategically positioned beyond the 14-kilometer danger zone.

Following the Taal eruption in January 2020, the local government, DHSUD, and the Department of Public Works and Highways completed the building of evacuation camps in the towns of Tanauan, San Pascual, San Juan, Santo Tomas, Lobo, and Bauan.

In Barangay Sta. Rita Karsada, Batangas City, and Tuy town, there are also ongoing DPWH-led evacuation center developments.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Taal Volcano has been on Alert Level 3 (magmatic unrest) since March 26, despite the fact that no volcanic earthquake has been observed in the previous 24 hours as of Tuesday morning.
