The deployment of OFWs to Saudi Arabia has been halted: DOLE

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced on Thursday that the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Saudi Arabia has been halted.

Contrary to false advice dated April 4, 2022, titled “Advisory No. 69 series of 2022,” the agency released the explanation, saying that Manila’s deployment prohibition to the kingdom had already been revoked.

“It’s a ruse!” The text of that advice contains not a single ounce of truth. The halt of deployment (to Saudi Arabia) continues in effect, according to DOLE Information and Publication Service head Rolly Francia.

According to Francia, the bogus certificate is primarily intended to cause confusion among the general public and personnel requesting deployment to the kingdom.

He went on to say that the head of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), Bernard Olalia, has stated that he has not signed or issued any advisory that is “obviously intended to mislead or confuse the public on DOLE policy.”

“The sham’s unscrupulous writers created the paper by repurposing an earlier advise and changing its contents to make it appear as a legal issuance.” As a result, it implies a desire to undermine POEA’s reputation and harm the agency’s current leadership,” the labor official noted.

Simultaneously, he stated that the Department of Labor has already enlisted the assistance of law enforcement authorities in tracking down the source of the bogus warning.

“We plan to use the full power of the law against whoever is responsible for this heinous crime that threatens the welfare of our foreign workers,” he continued.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III instructed Manila’s labor attachés in Saudi Arabia to halt the verification of new contracts for domestic service employees while a technical working group develops new verification procedures for their deployment in November of last year.

The issue entailed the non-payment of salary and end-of-service benefits to OFWs in the kingdom for one to two years, totaling about PHP4 billion.
