Senatorial candidate seeks free meals for children in public schools.
MANILA, Philippines โ Guillermo Eleazar, a senatorial contender, promised on Friday to advocate for a free breakfast program in public schools.
According to Eleazar, this program will necessitate coordination between the Departments of Education (DepEd) and Agriculture (DA), with the pilot locations being the country’s poorest provinces.
Should he win a Senate seat, the former national police chief promised to increase funding for the two organizations to purchase agricultural products from local farmers for use in the free lunch program at public schools.
“Dalawa ang makikinabang dito,” says the narrator.
Eleazar said he saw impoverished pupils skip lessons due to poverty, while others are obliged to work to assist their parents to make ends meet, citing his experience as a police officer posted to numerous provinces.
He claims that poverty is a factor in students’ low performance, particularly in underdeveloped provinces, because they are unable to focus on their academics due to inadequate nourishment.
This, according to Eleazar, also explains the significant learning difference between children in disadvantaged provinces and their peers in Metro Manila and other urban areas, particularly those in private schools.
“We need to address this issue, and I feel that one way to do so is through this free lunch program.” There are many good pupils in public schools, but their learning comprehension is hampered by their poverty (there are many good students in public schools, but their learning comprehension is hampered by their poverty) “Added he.
Eleazar said the free lunch program would also include other health-related services in public schools, such as regular dental, eye, and medical check-ups.
“We must make significant investments in children and youth because they are our future.” He continued, “The government owes them the best it can do in terms of providing their excellent health and decent education.”
