LGUs in Region 8 have been warned to prepare for probable floods and landslides.
TACLOBAN CITY – The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) has advised local government units in Eastern Visayas to be on the lookout for hazardous flash floods and landslides as Tropical Depression Agaton approaches.
The RDRRMC issued an advisory on Saturday urging local authorities to keep an eye on this weather disturbance for developments.
“Cloudy skies with sporadic rain showers and thunderstorms are likely as a result of the tropical depression.” During moderate to heavy rainfall, flash floods or landslides are possible consequences, according to the RDRRMC.
On Saturday morning, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was issued over Eastern Samar, the Dinagat Islands, Siargao, and the Bucas Grande Islands after the low-pressure area (LPA) east of Eastern Samar, which had been affecting the region in recent days, strengthened into a tropical depression.
As of early Saturday, the center of Tropical Depression Agaton was detected 130 kilometers east southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Rains in the Eastern Visayas region could cause flooding, according to PAGASA.
Sangputan, Palo, Solano, Daguitan, Marabong, Cadacan, Bongquirogon, Salug, Pagbanagaran, Pagsangahan, and Binahaan in Leyte; and Catarman, Bugko, Pambujan, Catubig, Palapag, Mano, and Gamay in Northern Samar, according to the weather agency.
The Oras, Dolores, Ulot, Taft, Borongan, Suribao, Llorente, Balangiga, and Sulat rivers in Eastern Samar; the Basey, Silaga, Calbiga, and Jibatan rivers in Samar; the Bisay, Himbangan, and Pandan rivers in Southern Leyte; and all river systems in Biliran are among the other rivers.
Residents in low-lying areas near these river systems have been warned to be on the lookout for potential flash floods.
Residents living near mountain ridges have been advised to keep an eye out for signs of landslides.
Due to the LPA, significant rains have been falling in several locations in the region since April 6.
