Part of the electoral information effort is ‘The President’s Chatroom.’
MANILA, Philippines – Malacanang said on Sunday that a state-run show featuring President Rodrigo Duterte interviewing senatorial candidates he sponsored for the May 2022 elections is part of the national government’s information distribution drive.
The first installment of “The President’s Chatroom,” which aired Saturday night, included former Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission Chair Greco Belgica and House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta, both senatorial contenders for the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
In a press statement, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar remarked, “The President’s Chatroom aims to promote some senatorial candidates and their platforms to a wider Filipino audience.”
He claimed that viewers would benefit from knowing who Duterte personally endorsed.
“This is part of the government’s information dissemination campaign about the 2022 elections and candidates whom President Rodrigo Roa Duterte previously promised to personally campaign for, and who, if elected, would ensure continuity of the current administration’s policies and programs,” he added.
Last month, People’s Television Network, Inc., in collaboration with the Commission on Elections and the PCOO, established “The Chatroom” to inform the public about the platforms and agendas of candidates.
Andanar has already conducted interviews with presidential hopefuls Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Senator Manny Pacquiao, Ernesto Abella, and even Leody de Guzman, a well-known government critic.
Dr. Willie Ong, a vice-presidential candidate, and other Senate hopefuls have also appeared in “The Chatroom.”
On March 31, Duterte backed 17 senatorial candidates, including six of the party’s seven senate candidates, at the PDP-Laban grand proclamation event in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
Duterte endorsed broadcaster Rey Langit, actor Robin Padilla, former presidential legal counsel and spokesperson Salvador Panelo, and former Commission on Filipinos Overseas Executive Director Astra Pimentel, with the exception of former Agrarian Reform Secretary John Castriciones.
Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, JV Ejercito and Jinggoy Estrada, siblings and former senators JV Ejercito and Jinggoy Estrada, Sorsogon Gov. Francis Escudero, former Information and Communications Technology Secretary Gregorio Honasan, former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, former Defense secretary Gilbert Teodoro, former Public Works secretary Mark Villar, and ree
Estrada, Honasan, Legarda, Marcoleta, Padilla, Roque, Teodoro, Villar, and Zubiri are nine of the 17 senatorial candidates in the UniTeam coalition of standard bearer Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and running mate Sara Duterte.
