Tropical depression ‘Agaton’ weakens.
MANILA, Philippines — The weather disturbance “Agaton” (international name Megi) has degraded into a tropical depression, according to the meteorological bureau’s 8 a.m. advisory Monday. It was last positioned over the coastal seas of Tanauan, Leyte.
“Agaton” presently has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gustiness of up to 75 kph around the center. It is slowly traveling north-northwestward.

In these places, strong breezes to near gales will persist, with rough to very severe seas expected along their coasts.
These conditions, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), could be dangerous for most maritime boats. Mariners operating these vessels are recommended to stay in port or seek shelter, while those operating larger vessels are encouraged to use caution when venturing out to sea and, if possible, avoid navigation in these conditions.
Over the remaining seaboards of the country that are not under any wind signal, moderate to rough seas will dominate.
Over Eastern Visayas, Masbate, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, and the northern and central regions of Cebu, including the Bantayan and Camotes Islands, moderate to heavy, with at times strong rains are expected.
Over the Dinagat Islands, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Quezon, and the rest of Bicol and the Visayas, light to moderate rains are expected, with heavy rains possible at times.
According to PAGASA, “Agaton” could deteriorate worse by Wednesday.
Tropical Storm Malakas, meanwhile, is expected to make landfall in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday.
According to PAGASA, “Malakas” is unlikely to have a direct impact on the country’s weather and is expected to leave PAR on Tuesday or Wednesday.
A total of 201 barangays are affected.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council announced in a Monday morning update that “Agaton” has hit 201 barangays in eight areas of the country.
In Muslim Mindanao, these areas are Regions 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, Caraga, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.
The number of affected families is estimated to be 86,515 or 136,390 people.
The number of evacuation facilities that have been activated so far is 71, with 3,717 families or 13,049 people being sheltered, with the rest being aided outside or by their families and friends.
The NDRRMC also confirmed allegations that one person was killed and another went missing in Region 11 as a result of the effects of “Agaton,” as well as claims that two people were injured in Region 10.
It also stated that 52 homes were destroyed, with 49 being classified as “mostly damaged” and three being classified as “completely ruined.”
These were reported in the Caraga and Regions 7,10, and 7.
