MANILA, Philippines — Senator Manny Pacquiao has asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to suspend laws prohibiting candidates from assisting disaster victims, such as people of Eastern Visayas devastated by Tropical Storm Agaton.

The presidential candidate announced on Tuesday that he will submit a formal request to the Comelec for permission to assist the victims.

Candidates are prohibited from giving out money or other gifts that could be interpreted as vote-buying under the law.

“Right now, I want to contribute,” he said in a statement. “If Comelec allows it, we will help in a way that does not contradict our candidacy.”

If his request is denied, Pacquiao stated that he will resort to his buddies for assistance.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, Signal No. 1 was active throughout Eastern Samar, Samar, Northern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Camotes Island in Cebu, however, hundreds have been displaced and at least 25 people have been confirmed killed in Eastern Visayas.

The communities of Can-ipa, Mailhi, Bunga, Gacat, Kantagnos, Bubon, Imelda, Makinhas, Maypatag, and Villa Solidaridad in Baybay City, Leyte, have been inundated and landslides have occurred.
