There will be no campaigning on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, according to the Comelec.

MANILA, Philippines — On Wednesday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) warned candidates and supporters in the May 9 national and local elections that campaigning is prohibited on April 14 (Maundy Thursday) and April 15 (Good Friday) (Good Friday).

Comelec Commissioner George Garcia advised hopefuls and supporters to take a two-day break from campaigning in an interview. He also invited everyone to pause and meditate on the occasion’s seriousness.

“Holy Week is a time of introspection, a high spiritual moment.” Campaigning will leave a terrible taste in our electorate, in addition to being outlawed,” the poll body official stated.

“Let us halt for a moment in solemnity and celebrate what unites us while forgetting what divides us,” Garcia continued.

At the same time, the Comelec representative cautioned them of the repercussions if they campaigned on those days.

“More significantly, they face disqualification and incarceration,” he warned.

Campaigning is prohibited during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, according to Comelec Resolution No. 10695. On Saturday, campaign activities will continue (April 16).

Meanwhile, Garcia refuted reports of a disagreement among members of the poll body’s seven-member panel.

“There isn’t anything like it. It’s more of a fantasy than a reality “he stated

“I promise you, there is no such gap, not even misunderstanding,” the poll body commissioner stated.

The purported schism began after Commissioner Socorro Inting resigned as chair of the gun ban commission.

However, he stated that the senior poll official will continue to serve as chair of the Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Concerns (CBFSC), despite the fact that the Commission en banc did not act on her resignation during its meeting on Wednesday.

Inting resigned as chair of the gun control committee after the seven-member panel voted 4-3 to approve a new resolution following revisions to two previous resolutions.

“The CBFSC has basically been rendered functus officio as a result of the publication on 6 April 2022 of Comelec Resolution No. 10777, which amended Comelec Resolution Nos. 10728 and 10757,” Inting wrote in her Memorandum.

“I cannot continue to serve as Chairperson of the CBFSC in good faith since this same post has already been rendered obsolete by the implementation of Comelec Resolution No. 10777,” she added.

Automatic gun ban exemptions were provided to prominent government officials under the new resolution.

Comelec Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan, Commissioners Garcia, Rey Bulay, and Aimee Neri voted in favor of the resolution.

Inting, Commissioners Marlon Casquejo, and Aimee Ferolino, on the other side, voted nay.
