The opening of Hotel Okura in the Philippines symbolizes a recovery in the hotel industry.

MANILA — Hotel Okura reopened in Manila on Tuesday, signaling the country’s hospitality industry’s slow recovery from nearly two years of pandemic-related lockdowns.

The first Okura Nikko Hotels property in the Philippines, the Japanese luxury hotel is located within the Resorts World complex in Newport City. It soft-opened in December 2021.

“We are overjoyed that Hotel Okura Manila is now open for business. We are certain that Okura’s omotenashi, along with the warmest Filipino hospitality and our spirit of ‘Wa’ (meaning harmony or teamwork), will blossom into the ultimate hospitality at this hotel,” stated Toshihiro Ogita, president of Hotel Okura Co., Ltd.

Benito Bengzon Jr., executive director of the Philippine Hotel Owners Association, said in an interview that the Japanese hotel brand’s arrival in Manila signals increased investor confidence in the Philippines.

“This is something that many people have been waiting for, and it signifies the hotel industry’s comeback. They opened while we were still in the midst of a pandemic, demonstrating that they believe in the Philippines “He informed reporters about it.

“This will also aid in the expansion or augmentation of the number of rooms available in Metro Manila. Of course, if you’re unfamiliar with the brand, Okura is a high-end Japanese retailer, and the fact that they’ve opted to operate in the United States speaks volumes about their confidence.”

The 11-story hotel has 190 rooms and a beautiful lobby with a soothing karesansui or zen rock garden that merges well with the structure’s Japanese-style interior.

It also has a variety of lodging options, including the Hinoku-yu room, which contains Japanese cypress wooden bathtubs handcrafted by artisans in Nagano’s mountainous Nagiso village.

The Yamazato, a fine dining restaurant, and the all-day dining Yawaragi, both in Hotel Okura Manila, serve traditional Japanese food.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat stated in a speech that Okura’s grand opening is a testimonial to the “improved state” of the tourism and hospitality industry.

“This historic occasion marks the beginning of the tourist and hospitality industry’s revival. We foresee greater tourism activity in the coming months since more sites are now under Alert Level 1 status “she stated

More than two months after the Philippines reopened its borders to foreign leisure guests, the hotel opened its doors.

According to government statistics, around 265,553 international tourists visited the country from February 10 to April 17.
