MOSCOW, Russia — According to European Commission (EC) Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis, in an interview with The Times published on Monday, the sixth package of sanctions against Russia may include some form of the oil embargo, though it is necessary to ensure that the damage to EU member states is minimized.

“We’re working on the sixth set of sanctions, and an oil embargo is one of the options we’re contemplating. We must impose sanctions in such a way that they increase pressure on Russia while minimizing collateral harm to ourselves “According to Dombrovskis.

According to the article, the politician said that the particular details of oil sanctions had not yet been agreed upon, but that they could involve a gradual phase-out of Russian oil or taxes on exports above a certain price threshold.

On April 22, the European newspaper Politico reported that the European Commission would provide a draft of the sixth package of anti-Russia penalties to EU governments this week.

According to the journal, which cited sources, it might involve limits on energy supplies and financial regulations, including the exclusion of several more institutions from SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication).

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine in response to a request from the heads of the Donbass republics, reiterating that Moscow had no plans to take Ukrainian territory.

The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and a number of other countries retaliated against Russian government acts by imposing sanctions on Russian physical and legal organizations.
