Family support and psychological interventions are required for gambling addicts.

SAN FERNANDO CITY. According to a health officer here, those addicted to gambling can be treated or even prevented through family support and psychological therapies.

Dr. Rosalina Caoile, the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center of La Union’s main health program officer, said gambling addiction can begin as early as adolescence, emphasizing the importance of instilling positive values in the home to prevent the tendency.

“It begins with curiosity and develops into a vice.” She remarked in a conference held by the Philippine Information Agency’s Ilocos regional office on Monday that instilling good values at home is crucial, as is choosing the proper friends and having a strong coping mechanism against stress.

Caoile advises family members to keep an eye on other members of their home for any behavioral changes so that the appropriate interventions can be made.

“They should be aware of any changes in their conduct, and they should watch the activities of the suspected gambling addict as soon as possible to avoid it from growing worse,” she said.

She went on to say that some of the behavioral changes could include restlessness, impulsivity, and impatience, among other things.

Caoile believes that depending on the severity of an individual’s addiction, they should seek help through therapy or rehabilitation.

“The issue could be caused by underlying issues such as sadness or anxiety.” “The client should see a counselor or a psychologist, but if the person is truly addicted to gambling, behavior modification and admission to a rehabilitation clinic are required,” she said.

The Department of Health offers gambling addiction therapy and other advocacy efforts. Only private clinics, on the other hand, provide behavioral treatment for gambling addicts.

Caoile stated that recovery could take six months or longer, with after-care lasting at least 18 months, which is an important step because relapse could occur during that time.

She added that there is a program for family members as part of the therapy.

“Addiction is a family problem because it affects not only the addicted person but also his or her family,” Caoile explained.

She went on to say that 4% of the country’s population had been diagnosed with gambling addiction.
