TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – As part of its preparations for the May 9 national and local elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has begun deploying 6,271 vote-counting machines (VCMs) and other election paraphernalia in Eastern Visayas.

This week, F2 Logistics, the Comelec’s election supplies forwarder, delivered the VCMs to local hubs in this city and Ormoc City for temporary storage before being distributed to local election offices and voting centers.

2,539 VCMs are destined for Leyte province, 644 for Southern Leyte, 216 for Biliran, 1,268 for Samar, 746 for Eastern Samar, and 858 for Northern Samar, out of a total of 6,271 VCMs.

“These VCMs have been secured by police, military, and election officers. From May 2 to 7, the VCMs will undergo final testing and sealing. On Wednesday, Comelec Eastern Visayas assistant regional director Felicisimo Embalsado said, “These machines will be brought to voting centers a day before the elections.”

The testing assures that the devices will be operational on election day. The general public and political parties are invited to attend.

In Eastern Visayas, at least 12,542 public school instructors have been trained to operate these machines.

1,558 VCMs and 606 ballots had been handed to local election offices in the region as of Wednesday.

A week before the election, the Comelec is expected to finish distributing ballot boxes, VCM batteries, and other necessary materials to local election offices.

According to Comelec, the region contains 3,166,262 registered voters in 4,390 localities.
