The PRRD proclaims August 30 to be National Press Freedom Day.
MANILA โ President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a bill designating August 30 as “National Press Freedom Day” every year.
In honor of Marcelo H. del Pilar, the father of Philippine journalism, National Press Freedom Day is observed on August 30 every year under Republic Act (RA) 11699, which was signed on April 13.
Del Pilar was born on August 30, 1890, and wrote under the pen name “Plaridel.”
According to RA 11699, the 30th of August is a working holiday every year.
All government agencies and instrumentalities, as well as the private sector, are directed to engage and participate in any related activity to be held on the premises of their respective offices or establishments, in order to ensure the “meaningful observance and celebration” of the National Press Freedom Day.
The Philippine Armed Forces, the Philippine National Police, government-owned and controlled enterprises, and local government units are all covered by the directive.
The Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) are mandated under Republic Act 11699 to lead public and private schools at all levels in organizing awareness-raising activities on the importance of the press, as well as their rights and social responsibilities.
DepEd, CHED, and TESDA have also been tasked with ensuring that all types of aggression against the press are taught.
In order to host activities relating to National Press Freedom Day, the three departments must confer with the President’s Office, the government, and private media groups.
The Palace released a copy of RA 11699 on Wednesday.
