After the e-sabong prohibition, Pagcor will hunt for alternative revenue streams: Palace
MANILA – After President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the immediate suspension of e-sabong, Malacanang expressed optimism that the Philippine Amusement Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) will be able to find new revenue streams (online cockfighting).
In a virtual press conference, acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar remarked, “Tiwala po kami sa kakayahan ng Pagcor (We trust Pagcor’s competence) to generate additional revenues.”
After Pagcor predicted a revenue loss of up to PHP5 billion from e-sabong operations in 2022, Andanar issued the statement.
Pagcor has given permission to six companies to operate e-sabong games as of March 2022.
Duterte announced his intention to heed the proposal of Local Government Secretary Eduardo Ao to terminate the e-sabong activities in a prerecorded Talk to the People aired Tuesday morning.
Ao took the decision after conducting a poll on the “social impact” of e-sabong on Filipinos.
Andanar claims that Malacaang’s Record Office has yet to issue an official document halting e-operations. sabong’s
Ao suggested that the betting game’s operations be halted “until a stronger set of rules and restrictions are developed, in such a way that it will not materially hurt any of the stakeholders and lead to the moral deterioration of society,” according to a report handed to Duterte.
Following Duterte’s new order, Ao directed the Philippine National Police and local government entities to put an end to all e-sabong activities across the country.
E-sabong brings in PHP650 million every month for Pagcor.
According to Pagcor data, the government collected PHP3.69 billion from the gambling operations of eight e-sabong licensees from April to December 2021.
A total of PHP1.37 billion was collected from the operations of seven licensees between January and March 15, 2022.
