After a historic victory, Cebu’s Garcia promises that the best is yet to come.
CEBU CITY, Philippines – Following her remarkable achievement of winning more than 1.4 million votes in Monday’s election, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia promised on Wednesday to step up efforts to raise the province of Cebu to a greater level of progress in the next three years.
Garcia was proclaimed on Tuesday night at the Provincial Capitol’s social hall by lawyer Jerome Brillantes, who also serves as the chair of the provincial Board of Canvassers.
After Brillantes stated that all of the canvass certificates from the province’s 51 towns and component cities had been received and canvassed, One Cebu Party counsel, lawyer Rory Jon Sepulveda, moved to declare the winner.
“After all the votes from the seven legislative districts of Cebu’s one big province were counted and canvassed, Gwendolyn Fiel Garcia, the incumbent governor who is currently serving a historic fourth term, received 1,478,436 votes… In introducing his motion, Sepulveda said, “The first woman to be elected as governor of Cebu, making a trail of historic victories, has now made another first, being the first to have breached the one-million mark in the history of the electoral process in the province of Cebu, with a resounding majority of 1.1 million votes over her opponent.”
In her address, Garcia praised the Cebuanos for their tremendous support, which she claimed would help her rise beyond her “own personal comfort” and prioritize the Cebuanos’ interests.
She also complimented the government agencies for providing the provincial government with “important insights” during the pandemic’s “tough periods.”
Durano admitted defeat, congratulated Garcia and his running companion, Hilario Davide III, who was re-elected vice governor.
“My heartfelt appreciation to all Cebuanos who supported our cause of #ABetterCebu and the Cebu Priority Development Agenda. I have no regrets about running for governor because I feel Cebu desperately needs a stronger health program, equal possibilities for livelihood, and projects in all areas. However, the people have a voice, and the majority’s desire will be carried out),” Durano stated in a message on his social media website.
Garcia advocated for the reopening of Cebu’s economy, particularly the tourism industry, as a significant step forward for the island while the rest of the country was still recovering from the pandemic’s effects.
During the epidemic, the governor implemented programs including Sugbo Negosyo, Sugbusog, Enhanced Countryside Development, and Sugbo Kahanas to assist Cebuanos facing economic hardships.
Cebu became debt-free, the richest province in the country, and insurgency-free because to the initiatives.
