CEBU CITY, Philippines – Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has pledged to seek approval for the improvement of all provincial hospitals to increase bed capacity, modernize equipment, and hire more medical experts in order to improve healthcare services in rural areas.

Only two of the four provincial government-managed hospitals endorsed in 2020 to the Department of Health (DOH) for upgrading from Level 1 to Level 2 have been authorized, according to Garcia, who spoke at a press conference on Tuesday.

The two other capitol-run hospitals in the cities of Carcar and Balamban are still awaiting permission from the Department of Health, she added.

Once the DOH accepts the classification upgrade, the existing bed capacity as well as the current workforce of doctors, nurses, and support staff would be enhanced.

“Equipment will also be modified to meet the requirement as a result of the increased bed capacity… Approval of plans for extra structures is part of the process,” she stated in Cebuano.

Last year, the province government also requested that the district hospitals on Bantayan Island in the north and Camotes Island in the east be upgraded to Level 1 by the Department of Health.

She stated that residents in any corridor of the province may expect better health care services and amenities.

“I’m doing everything I can to improve our medical services in the province as much as humanly feasible,” she continued.

Although there is no need for legislation to upgrade provincial hospitals, the procedure may take some time because the Department of Health requires applicants to meet certain criteria before receiving permission.

Aside from the four provincial hospitals in the north, south, east, and west corridors, the province also oversees 12 district hospitals in various towns and component cities.
