As the global food crisis looms, urban gardening is promoted.
MANILA – Agriculture Secretary William Dar urged the people on Wednesday to explore urban farming methods to help raise food production in the country, as he warned of an impending worldwide food crisis.
Dar stated at the Laging Handa public briefing that the community should assist farmers and fishermen in ensuring food security in the coming months.
“We must be prepared, and if possible, each Filipino should plant, raise, and fish in metropolitan areas.” Let’s do everything we can to boost our farmers’ and fishermen’s output. We, as citizens, the plantito and plantita, must also do it,” he added in a combination of Filipino and English.
Increasing farm input prices, for example, have tripled the price of many fertilizers, while the price of some chicken diets has doubled.
“The second semester of the year is approaching. Are the input prices visible to you? We should have advanced planning because there are limited sources in the global food market, which is why we have been warning and developing solutions,” he stated in Filipino.
Meanwhile, Dar underlined that the country now has enough rice, vegetables, and fish. However, given the consequences of the pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, he believes the future administration should prioritize cushioning the impact of the impending constraint on food supply.
He went on to say that the future administration must accept and strengthen the National Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization and Industrialization Plan (NAFMIP), which has the potential to turn the Philippines into an “agricultural mega-industry.”
According to the United Nations (UN) Task Team for the Global Crisis Response Group, “food insecurity, energy prices, and financial loads” will affect an estimated 1.7 billion people worldwide, the bulk of whom are from developing economies.
“Given the high levels of socioeconomic stress following the COVID-19 crisis and the developing repercussions of climate change, just one of these channels – debt distress, food shortages, or blackouts – is enough to spark collapse.” “Of these 1.7 billion people, 553 million are already poor, and 215 million are already malnourished,” according to the task team’s April 2022 report.
The UN also stated that Russia and Ukraine’s dominant role in food, oil, and fertilizer supplies will affect 107 economies, including 38 economies in Asia and the Pacific.
