For the first time since the outbreak, Spain and Morocco reopen their borders.

On Tuesday, the land borders between Spain’s two African enclaves and Morocco were reopened for the first time in 26 months.

El Tarajal’s border crossing was a joyful affair when it opened around midnight.

People celebrated and sang after the long-awaited restoration of mobility, according to the Spanish daily El Pais. Overnight, hundreds of individuals crossed the border.

Ceuta is a little over seven square miles (18 square kilometers) in size, but Melilla is only five square miles.

They are the EU’s sole land boundary with an African country.

Many residents of the area live in both Spain and Morocco. There were an estimated 5,000 cross-border workers prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.

However, the borders have not reverted to their former state. For the time being, only those with valid Schengen visas are permitted to enter Spain.

Cross-border employees will be let in on May 31, while a working group continues to determine which groups of persons or goods will be permitted to cross the border next.

Due to the pandemic, the border was originally blocked in March 2020, but Morocco maintained it closed to encourage Spain to modify its attitude toward Western Sahara independence.

Ceuta was the scene of a fierce political battle between Spain and Morocco exactly one year ago.

On May 17, 2021, Moroccan guards let more than 10,000 refugees come into Ceuta after Spain was detected treating the commander of the Western Sahara Polisario Front, a Moroccan foe, for Covid-19.

However, the conflict has now dissipated. Madrid has changed its mind and now agrees with Rabat that Western Sahara should be an autonomous territory of Morocco.

Spain has increased police presence in its African enclaves following the reopening of the borders.
