TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – In the previous four weeks, the government’s free ride program has benefited almost 1 million commuters in Eastern Visayas, according to the regional office of the Land Transport Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

From April 18 to May 16, 2022, the LTFRB’s service contracting program provided free rides to 1,014,602 passengers in six provinces using 673 public utility buses, jeepneys, and vans.

“The program will finish on May 30, but if finances are still available, it may be extended next month.” In an interview, Veronica Reposar, the LTFRB regional transportation development office chief, said, “This ensures the revenue of our drivers and operators and helps our compatriots save from their transportation expenses this pandemic.”

The government is investing PHP200 million in the third round of free public transportation rides in Eastern Visayas.

Public utility vehicle owners and drivers who participate in the government’s free ridership program will get a one-time payment and monthly payments based on the number of kilometers traveled each week, whether or not they have passengers, under the LTFRB’s service contracting program.

A commercial company uses the global positioning system to track each of the 673 public utility cars (GPS).

The General Appropriations Act 2022, which has a total amount of PHP7 billion authorized for roughly 13,000 to 15,000 cars with about 1,000 routes statewide, commenced the service contracting program phase III.
