The JFK Service Award is given to a Filipino.
MANILA – Roberto “Ambet” Yangco, the United States Peace Corps Philippines’ youth program manager, has been named the first Filipino to receive the renowned John F. Kennedy Service Award.
“Yangco was honored for his outstanding lifetime contributions and leadership in assisting the Philippines’ most disadvantaged youth. He has inspired Filipino at-risk adolescents to volunteer and subsequently become social workers in their communities, among other accomplishments, and he runs one of the US Peace Corps’ top-ranked volunteer programs worldwide “The US Embassy in Manila issued a statement on Tuesday.
Yangco received the honor, which is only granted once every five years to two staff members and two American volunteers, from US Peace Corps CEO Carol Spahn on May 19 at the US Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.
“It’s time for us to lead by the power of our example, not the power of our example,” Spahn remarked, paraphrasing US Vice President Joe Biden. “In so many ways, Ambet brings this to life. He has committed his life to service and is considered an inspiration to everyone who knows him.”
Yangco oversaw over 300 American volunteers in orphanages, shelters, and youth centers around the Philippines as head of the US volunteer organization’s Youth Program.
Thousands of Filipino at-risk kids have been protected from homelessness, trafficking, violence, and narcotics during his 22-year Peace Corps service, according to the Embassy, by providing them with education, job opportunities, and life skills development.
“Ambet exemplifies the best of the US Peace Corps and the Peace Corps Philippines,” said the Peace Corps Philippines “Jenner Edelman, Country Director for the Peace Corps in the Philippines, said
“He has answered President Kennedy’s call to lifelong service, and our Philippine partners, past volunteers, and staff all admire and appreciate him for the passion and commitment he brings to his job and for positively influencing the lives of so many young people,” she added.
Yangco spent his childhood hunting for meals and sleeping on pavements in Olongapo City. He was taken in by a local Catholic non-government group that helps abandoned and underprivileged children when he was 11 years old.
Since then, he has dedicated his life to aiding the Filipino kids as a way of “paying it forward.”
Yangco, a trained social worker, has worked as an HIV/AIDS outreach worker, a street kid educator, a community development officer, and a member of the US Peace Corps.
John F. Kennedy, former US President and creator of the US Peace Corps, is honored with the JFK Service Award.
Only “those who displayed remarkable leadership and devotion to service, as well as a lifelong commitment to the Peace Corps’ purpose of world peace and friendship,” according to the embassy.
