MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) is investigating the need for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test kits for monkeypox surveillance and monitoring.

The agency said in a Viber message to reporters that it is coordinating and reviewing laboratory criteria for monkeypox surveillance with the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and the Philippine Genome Center.

According to reports, Chinese test kit makers have created nucleic acid test kits for monkeypox.

The kits will be mass-produced and sold if the Chinese government approves them.

“When it comes to procuring specific brands of RT-PCR tests for monkeypox, the Department of Health will base its judgments on scientific evidence.” The DOH text message said, “We will send updates once meaningful events have happened.”

The monkeypox vaccine is not currently included in the National Immunization Program, according to the agency.

A vaccine for monkeypox has been developed, but it is not yet widely available, according to the World Health Organization.

The Department of Health is looking into all available sources and legal options for obtaining monkeypox vaccines.

“At the moment, the Department of Health is working on supply chains and logistics services. Internal conversations are ongoing, based on scientific evidence, about the possibility of acquiring antivirals in the event of a serious case outbreak,” the notification stated.

To guarantee public safety, the DOH will consult and review monkeypox immunization with expert societies and development partners, as well as priority demographic groups.

Monkeypox has yet to be discovered in the country, but instances have been documented in Europe and North America, and the disease is still spreading in at least 20 countries.
