Access to Eastern Samar’s main attraction is now easier thanks to a new road.
TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – Following the construction of the PHP27.35 billion road going to the famous Canhugas Nature Park in Hernani, Eastern Samar, more tourists have been flocking to the region.
In a phone interview Monday, Cleopatra Bantang, operations manager of Canhugas Nature Park, said it is problematic for tourists to visit the site owing to rough and muddy roads, especially during the rainy season.
“It was difficult to get here before the concreting process. Despite the magnificence of the park, travelers are discouraged from visiting because the terrible route damages automobile tires,” Bantang explained.
The road leading to Canhugas is 1.898 kilometers long and has a typical national highway width.
The tourism route is a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways’ Eastern Samar district engineering office that began in 2019 as part of the Convergence and Special Support Program. It was completed the previous year.
Parking spots were also built near the tourist attraction as part of the road project.
“We are grateful to the national government for giving cash because the project could not be realized with the local government’s meager resources,” Bantang stated.
The nature park is adjacent to the town center, just a few meters from the national highway, and is considered one of the top tourist spots in Eastern Samar province.
The name Canhugas comes from the native phrase “hugas” (wash), which refers to a site where fishermen would wash their catch.
Tourists flock to the tourist site because of the massive waves that pound the big rock structure.
Its picture-perfect scenery of enormous waves crashing on the Bato-Bato Peak, which faces the Pacific Ocean, is spectacular. The Canhugas tiny falls, with overflowing waters from the enormous ocean waves, is another highlight.
Inside Canhugas, visitors can go snorkeling and swimming in little lagoons.
