Bello and Ople meet to ensure that the Department of Migrant Workers transitions smoothly.

MANILA, Philippines — For the transition of offices, some incoming and exiting government officials, mainly from the abroad employment sector, met.

Newly appointed Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan Ople and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III have already discussed the terms of the transfer, according to Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Director Bernard Olalia.

They also met with the new DMW chief to discuss the new Department’s operations, he noted.

“Toots Ople, the new Secretary of State, has already met with Secretary Bello. During the Laging Handa briefing, Olalia stated, “They have already talked and there has been an exchange of knowledge on what would be done in this transition.”

“We at POEA have also spoken with the incoming secretary and highlighted what we are already doing for DMW as well as the next steps to fully operationalize DMW,” he added.

On Friday, he said, Ople will meet with members of the transition committee, including the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs, the National Maritime Polytechnic, the International Labor Affairs Bureau, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the POEA.

“The transition committee is currently focusing on the personnel pattern. The organizational structure (and) offices, particularly regional offices, are in the process of being established. “Not only do we have offices in Ortigas, but we also have regional and provincial offices,” he explained.

“Its goal is to bring the service closer to the OFWs so that they don’t have to suffer and don’t fall prey to illicit recruitment,” he added.

When the DMW is fully formed, it will include the POEA, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and other related institutions.

In December 2021, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed Republic Act 11641, commonly known as “An Act Establishing the Department of Migrant Workers.”
