POPCOM and campaigners call on the future administration to address unintended pregnancies.
MANILA, Philippines โ On Wednesday, the Philippine Commission on Population (POPCOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development Foundation, Inc. (PLCPD) urged President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.’s incoming administration to maintain a strong family planning program that will eliminate unintended pregnancies, particularly among youth.
Unplanned births, according to POPCOM Executive Director Undersecretary Juan Antonio Perez III, frequently have consequences and limit chances, especially for young expectant moms.
“It denies so many young people the opportunity to participate in mainstream development,” he said at the UNFPA’s 2022 State of the World Population (SWOP) Report and the launch of its publication “Seeing the Unseen: The Case for Action in the Neglected Crisis of Unintended Pregnancy,” held at Crowne Plaza, Ortigas Center, Quezon City.
Perez stated that the Philippine civilization will not “age” until 2035.
“So, between now and 2035, we have a window of opportunity to take advantage of this demographic transition with low fertility. This translates to a computation growth rate of roughly 1%. With the continued reduction in unplanned pregnancies, we are hopeful that this trend will continue. However, rather than the 1.5 percent growth rate seen in the previous five years, the population will continue to expand at a more manageable rate of 1% “he stated
According to the POPCOM chairman, over 63 percent of the present Philippine population has the ability to work, but the country still needs to enhance youth employment, women’s labor force participation, education, and technical-vocational skills.
“This meets the needs of the country by preventing people from roaming. To bring this country ahead, much work needs to be done in these areas. At the family level, these policies should be addressed “Perez continued.
According to the 2022 SWOP Report, the Philippines is in the same boat as Bangladesh, Benin, Chad, and Indonesia, where “more than a fifth of births to females under the age of 18 were the consequence of premarital conception, which frequently predates the marriage of girls.”
During the same event, PLCPD Executive Director Romeo Dongeto said, “This is a problem that has gone neglected, despite the fact that several institutions, including the government, have repeatedly raised the alarm.”
Dongeto noted departing President Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Order 141, which calls on government agencies to address the core causes of adolescent pregnancy.
“In terms of adolescent pregnancy, President Duterte has made an extremely important policy statement. I believe that our executive partners, POPCOM and DSWD, should persuade the next government, notably President Marcos, to embrace this strategy and inform our legislators about it within the first 500 days of his presidency “he stated
In the meantime, UNFPA Country Representative Leila Saiji Joudane stated that women in nations with greater equality, empowerment and financial resources are better able to treat or prevent unplanned pregnancies.
“Discrimination against women and girls is widespread. This is a hidden crisis developing right before our eyes, as well as a global failure to protect women’s and girls’ basic human rights “she stated
Joudane urged Filipinos to join their effort to empower women and girls in making positive sexual activity and parenthood decisions.
“One that occurs to a mother who was not planning to have any (more) children, or that was mistimed, in that it occurred sooner than expected,” according to the publication.
