PRRD encouraged the President to sign a bill tripling the monthly pension for the elderly.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” As a “parting present,” a congressman urged President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to put into law a bill boosting the monthly social pension of poor senior citizens from PHP500 to PHP1,000 before he leaves office by the end of June.

The bill’s author, Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte, claimed it only needs Duterte’s assent because both the Senate and the House of Representatives approved a consolidated version for submission to Malacanang last week.

“Filipinos have a natural reverence and respect for their elders.” It is embedded in our culture and mirrored in our own Constitution, which states that caring for the elderly is a familial responsibility,” Villafuerte said in a statement. “In turn, the state protects and provides social services to such a vulnerable population as the elderly.”

With inflation and “ever-growing” living standards, he said, senior adults are finding it more difficult to “live as comfortably as they can in their old age.”

“Despite the fact that the elderly in the Philippines are regarded and respected for their wisdom and experiences, they nonetheless face obstacles in their daily lives as a result of their advanced age. The state has taken legal steps to ensure their safety and security, but most of them are facing financial difficulties since they are unable to work or do not receive a monthly pensionโ€”or both,” he said.

Given that financial assistance from pensions such as the Social Security System (SSS) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has proven “insufficient,” he claims that the PHP 1,000 increase in their monthly pension will help to alleviate their financial load.

Other pension options, such as a cash distribution, are included in the bill, and the beneficiary seniors will no longer be charged a transaction fee.

The responsibility of administering the monthly pension to the beneficiaries-senior citizens is also transferred from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC).

Senator Joel Villanueva believes that, in light of the recent rise in commodity prices, boosting the monthly social stipend for senior residents is a good idea.

“There are elderly who can no longer work and cannot rely on their families for support, or who have no family,” Villanueva explained.
