Australia places high importance on marine cooperation with the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines — The Australian Embassy in Manila promised the Philippines that Canberra will work with them to maintain regional rules-based order.

The statement, dated June 17, comes after Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. voiced dissatisfaction with Australia’s decision not to support the Philippines’ bid for membership in the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS).

Australia does not reveal particular specifics of its vote intentions on each multilateral candidate, according to the Embassy, but it assured that it “remains strongly committed” to working with Manila, especially in the CLCS.

According to the statement, “Australia remains strongly committed to working with the Philippines and other partners, including in the CLCS, to support the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) in creating marine zones and safeguarding the rules-based system.”

“Australia regards our maritime cooperation as a long-time partner and staunch supporter of the Philippines. Australia is a reliable ally for the Philippines “It was also added.

Locsin stated in a tweet from the Department of Foreign Affairs on June 15: “I am deeply disappointed that Australia is unable to support our CLCS candidacy. I put my neck out for AUKUS. We thought we were partners in maintaining a maritime order based on norms. Please help us out.”

AUKUS, the trilateral security treaty between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, is considered a way to offset China’s expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific, according to Locsin.

Deputy Administrator Efren Carandang of the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) secured a seat at the CLCS on June 16 with 113 votes from a total of 164 states present after “four arduous rounds of voting,” despite Australia’s lack of support.

Carandang is the first Filipino to be appointed to the UN council, having competed against eight other candidates from the Asia-Pacific Group (APG).
