South Korea promises to forge closer ties with Asean.

During a gathering with his colleagues from the countries of the important regional bloc in Phnom Penh on Thursday, Seoul’s top diplomat announced that South Korea would strengthen “strategic dialogue” with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) on regional concerns.

During the Asean-South Korea ministerial meeting, Park Jin, the first foreign minister of the Yoon Suk-yeol government, stated that “our partnerships (with Asean) will focus on strengthening strategic relations in the economic area and beyond.”

Since 1997, the annual session has taken place each year.

Less than three months after the Yoon government took office in lieu of the Moon Jae-in administration, which advocated for the New Southern Policy designed to strengthen Seoul’s strategic connections with Asean and India, Park was briefing the Asean members on the Yoon government’s regional policy.

Myanmar, which is governed by a military government, did not attend the event this year.

As a “global key nation,” Seoul has announced its intention to take a more active role in promoting freedom, peace, and prosperity around the world, according to Park.

Asean, which is an essential component of the Indo-Pacific region, will naturally become the focal point of South Korea’s new endeavor, he continued.

South Korea is a “trustworthy and reliable partner” for Asean, he continued.

In order to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula and find a solution to the nuclear issue, Park criticized the conservative Yoon administration’s policy toward North Korea and appealed for support from Asean nations.

Later that day, he attended a larger Asean Plus Three gathering that also included the foreign ministers of China and Japan, Hayashi Yoshimasa and Wang Yi.

Due to the coronavirus epidemic 2019 pandemic, the Asean-hosted meetings were held virtually in 2020 and 2021, making these the first in-person trilateral foreign ministerial talks in three years.

Following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s travel to Taiwan earlier this week, tensions between Washington and Beijing were particularly high at the time of their meeting.

Wang avoided bringing up the delicate subject in his opening remarks.

To confront North Korean military threats, South Korea and Japan have agreed to step up their security cooperation with the US, and Washington has invited the East Asian countries to join the so-called Chip 4 alliance with Taiwan in the semiconductor sector.
