NICA official: ROTC fosters discipline and voluntarism.
Resuming the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) will increase young involvement in community activities, according to a representative of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA). This will further strengthen their spirit of volunteering.
On the sidelines of the agency’s handover of relief supplies to the Abra Diocese, to be distributed to earthquake victims, NICA Region 1 Director Mildred Abordo said, “If you expose the young people to community activities where they will see or feel their fellowmen, they will see the importance of making themselves useful not just for themselves, but the others.”
According to her, requiring ROTC in schools does not necessarily entail teaching students how to handle and fire weapons.
“There are several methods to administer the ROTC program; one of them is to expose and train them how to respond to and assist during tragedies,” stated Abordo.
She refuted assertions made in some circles that the ROTC teaches students how to become young soldiers.
It’s not true because we had ROTC earlier and it didn’t make the students into youth soldiers, according to Abordo, who added, “Hindi totoo yun kasi may ROTC naman tayo noon pa at hindi naman ginawang youth soldiers ang mga estudyante.”
She continued by saying that the main goal of ROTC is to develop young volunteers who help those in need.
She claimed that disaster can strike at any moment and anywhere and that having young people who are compassionate will greatly lessen the victims’ pain.
She pointed out that the ROTC teaches valuable principles that will shape young people into responsible citizens, like discipline, voluntarism, and caring for others.
According to Abordo, NICA exposes its young employees to volunteerism in times of disaster by having them gather supplies to bring to victims.
