The number of intellectual property registrations from January to June 2022 grew from the previous year and even surpassed the pre-pandemic level, according to a report released on Thursday by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).

In the first half of the year, there were 23,410 filings for intellectual property, up 1.6 percent from 23,048 in the same period the previous year.

Patents, trademarks, utility models, and industrial designs are among those that can be registered.

With 22,968 filings, the first semester of this year also saw more intellectual property registrations than the first half of 2019.

According to IPOPHL, the agency registered a record number of intellectual property rights in 2019.

According to IPOPHL director general Rowel Barba, “the increase in the first half is representative of the reduced Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) restrictions and rekindled economic activities as well as IPOPHL’s amplified awareness and education programs.”

The majority of intellectual property registrations, or 20,300, were trademark registrations; of these, 12,514 were filed by residents and 7,786 by non-residents.

Pharmaceutical, health, and cosmetic product trademark registrations saw the most filings (6,145) during January to June 2022, followed by agricultural products and services (5,403) and scientific, information, and communications technology (4,697).

Pharmaceuticals, organic chemistry, and biotechnology were the key drivers of the 1,949 patent applications that were registered.

On the other side, there were 622 utility model applications and 539 industrial design filings.

“IPOPHL intends to maintain momentum in igniting Filipinos’ deeper appreciation of the benefits of intellectual property through our ongoing and planned initiatives and projects to promote intellectual property creation, protection, and commercialization. In order to assist our economy recover more quickly and inclusively, Barba added, we also wish to support more original and creative intellectual efforts this year.
