The soda shortage presents an opportunity to switch to healthier beverages: NNC.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) regional office in this city stated on Wednesday that the low production of soft drinks resulting from a shortage of refined sugar would bolster an earlier resolution prohibiting the use of sweetened beverages at government-sponsored events.

Resolution No. 69 of the Eastern Visayas Regional Development Council encourages the serving of healthy beverages at government events, but this has not been implemented on multiple occasions since its issuance in 2015, according to Catalino Dotollo, coordinator of the NNC’s regional nutrition program.

“The shortage presents an opportunity to strictly implement the resolution prohibiting the use of sweetened beverages in activities involving at least federal government agencies and local government units,” Dotollo said in a phone interview.

The RDC passed the resolution on December 11, 2015, after noting that carbonated beverages are the most common beverages served at government meetings, seminars, and other gatherings.

It is time to promote the consumption of water and healthy beverages such as non-concentrated fruit juices, he said, because doing so would reduce the incidence of noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes.

The region reported 4,255 cases of type 2 diabetes in 2021.

Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, and ARC Refreshments Corporation, the top soft drink manufacturers in the Philippines, said in a joint statement that the industry is experiencing a shortage of premium refined sugar or bottlers’ grade sugar, “a key ingredient” in their products.

Earlier, the Department of Agriculture stated there are indications of a rapidly diminishing sugar supply.
