DENR Region 8 renews its appeal for the preservation of PH Deer

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional office in Eastern Visayas reiterated its appeal on Wednesday for people in rural areas to help preserve endangered species.

Following the rescue of two Philippine Deer, locally called as “bugsok,” by members of the Mamanwa tribe in the highland Kagbana hamlet in Burauen, Leyte in May, the DENR renewed its appeal.

After falling into a trapping hole used by villagers to capture animals for food, the two deers were rescued.

Because the wild animals had wounds, village authorities held them until they were ready to go to the DENR Regional Wildlife Rescue Center in Palo, Leyte, earlier this week.

Michael De Luis, village head of Lanawan, a nearby town of Kagbana, sent the deers to the rescue facility on Tuesday.

According to the official, they have been running a public awareness campaign to encourage people to be aware of the rules that protect animals.

“When the Mamanwas came to me, I informed them about the penalties for killing and injuring a deer since they are endangered,” De Luis said in an interview on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Palo Community Environment and Natural Resource Office director Crisostomo Badeo, Jr. praised residents’ efforts to preserve the region’s animals.

β€œThe presence of the Philippine Deer in our forests indicates that we still have an ecologically balanced ecosystem, which necessitates increased protection efforts from all of us. If you have any wildlife species in your possession or see any wildlife species in danger, please contact the DENR office nearest you,” Badeo said.

DENR Administrative Order 2019-9 classifies the Philippine Deer as endangered.

Republic Act 9147, An Act Providing for the Conservation and Protection of Wildlife Resources and Their Habitats, makes possession, killing, and causing damage illegal.

The dense woods of Samar and Leyte provinces are the deer’s native home in the area.
