After receiving Nescafé training, Mindanao coffee farmers now earn more.
In 2021, the yield and income of approximately 1,500 small coffee farmers in Mindanao increased by 64 percent and 45 percent, respectively.
The increase in harvests was the result of the completion of Nestlé Philippines’ NESCAFÉ Plan’s three-year Project Coffee+.
Since 2019, 980 farmers from Sultan Kudarat and 520 farmers from Bukidnon have participated in intensive training to develop an “agripreneurial” mindset.
“Along with the efforts of our partners and other stakeholders, the NESCAFÉ Plan aims to increase the capacity of farmers for regeneration and to build a future with green coffee beans sourced from farmers adopting regenerative agriculture practices,” Nestlé Philippines’ head Kais Marzouki said in a statement released on Wednesday.
The Rainforest Alliance, an international non-governmental organization addressing deforestation, climate change, systemic poverty, and social inequity, reported the increase in production in order to assess the sustainability of the NESCAFÉ Plan through monitoring and evaluation.
The adoption of regenerative farming practices by Project Coffee+ farmers, such as agroforestry, the application of organic matter, and the rejuvenation of coffee trees, had a positive effect on the total harvest, according to the report.
“As we progress in our transition to regenerative food systems, we want to encourage consumers to be more cognizant of how raw materials are cultivated and how products are manufactured when making purchasing decisions,” Marzouki said.
Cooperating with the German development agency Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the project provided training to smallholder coffee farmers, primarily in agronomic practices such as grafting, pruning, rejuvenation, and organic and inorganic fertilization.
Significant increases in yield and income are attributable to their adoption of an agri-enterprise approach to farming, which includes the application of acquired skills in better farm planning, budgeting, seeking financial services, and farm diversification, among others.
The Nescafé Plan in the country is a long-term initiative to increase the supply of Robusta coffee, which lags significantly behind demand, by assisting farmers in increasing the productivity of coffee farming in an effort to improve their standard of living.
Mindanao is primarily responsible for the cultivation of Robusta, which accounts for 66% of the country’s coffee output.
Nestlé is the largest purchaser of Robusta green coffee beans in the Philippines. It increased its volume purchases of locally grown coffee by 41% in 2021 compared to 2020, sourcing from participants in NESCAFÉ Plan projects as well as consolidators, smallholder farmers, and farmer cooperatives in Mindanao.
